This stunningly beautiful region of still lakes, fast flowing
streams, gentle rolling valleys, ravines and forested mountains
has been one of the best kept secrets in France. Away from
the tourist crowds of the Dordogne and similar regions of
France, the Limousin has maintained its own brand of quality
time and quality of life.
It is a region steeped in history and mythology, with charming
chateaux, churches dating back to the XII century, breathtaking
scenery, pretty villages and hamlets to explore (some the
most beaufiful in France) and, most importantly, a genuine
old fashioned warmth towards visitors which would be hard
to match anywhere. The mythology of the region extends to
werewolves, sorcerers and saints which gives the place its
magical quality.
Here you can visit many beautiful chateaux, museums and
parks. Wander around the old city of Limoges with its towering
cathedral and famous "Butchers Quarter", tour
the porcelain museums and factories, or do some serious
shopping!
There
is so much that is exceptional about this region that to
try and describe it in a few lines would be impossible.
For that reason we have developed our own site dedicated
to the Limousin region, its history, culture and attractions
- you will also find some of the sites on the Limousin Links
page are also in English and cover every aspect of life
in this relatively unknown area of France. Just click on
the golimousin image on the left to take you to our extensive
guide to the Limousin region.
The Limousin also caters well for younger children, below
is just a sample of what is available:

Known affectionately as the "Lake District"
of France, it is no surprise that it also caters well for
those interested in walking, riding, fishing
and
watersports. Golf is well represented with a good selection
of courses and visitors are always welcome. In a region
so close to nature you would expect attractions devoted
to this subject and you would not be disappointed - there
is even a park devoted to raising wolves (including the
white wolf) in their natural habitat.
There are many fine forest walks through stunning countryside
where you can be alone with nature. Horse riding and pony
trekking is immensely popular and their are many fine venues.
Agriculture is centred around beef production, this is the
birthplace of the world famous Limousin breed of cattle
- raised naturally - it is simply unbeatable! The local
mushrooms, chestnuts and walnuts find their way into almost
every aspect of the excellent cuisine, and if deserts are
your passion then look no further!
Whatever your interest, the Limousin has something special
to offer, whatever your age! To see more of what the Limousin
can offer then visit our regional site:
